About us

Rooted in Faith

Rooted in over a century of Catholic education, Sacred Heart School continues to grow through faith, dedication, and community support. From the early days of the Sisters of St. Joseph to today’s vibrant parish school, our mission remains the same—to form children in faith, knowledge, and service. The Sacred Heart School Endowment ensures that this mission will continue for generations to come.

“If a Catholic parish is going to flourish, the children must be taught religion.”

History of the School

Sacred Heart School opened its doors in September 1916 under the direction of the Sisters of St. Joseph, offering the first Catholic education opportunity for children in Dodge City. Early classes were held in the remodeled Sacred Heart Church, which had been newly constructed the year before. Together, the church and school laid the foundation for a growing parish community centered on faith and education.

As the parish flourished, so did the school. By 1928, a new four-classroom building and auditorium were added to meet the needs of more students. Under the leadership of Monsignor Joseph Grellner, expansions in 1949 and 1954 brought additional classrooms and a gymnasium—a lasting symbol of the parish’s dedication to providing a strong Catholic education for generations of families.

“We can survive forever if Catholics are convinced that the parochial school system is valid."

- Monsignor George Hussman, Parish Centennial 1992

For more than a century, Sacred Heart School has shaped the faith, character, and future of thousands of children. That same commitment continues today—strengthened by the generosity, sacrifice, and belief that Catholic education is essential to the life of our parish and community.
